• 발음 : 약성[ əv ], 강성 [ ɑːv ] > v 발음 시 바람 소리 가득 넣기!
• 예문
  • Look at the roof of that building.
  • We didn't see the beginning of the movie. (not the movie's beginning)
  • What's the name of this town?
  • Do you know the cause of the problem?
  • You can sit in the back of the car.
  • Madrid is the capital of Spain.
• of vs. 's
  • 's는 주로 people의 소유를 지칭할 때 사용한다.
  • 문법적으로는 맞지만, 일반적인 대화에서는 무분별하게 사용된다.

a/an : articles

• a : one thing or person
• an : before a/e/i/o/u

a/an을 붙이는 기준은 단어의 앞 글자의 자음/모음 여부가 아니라 앞 발음의 자음/모음 여부다!!

• an hour (h는 발음되지 않는다.)
• a university (yuniversity로 발음되는데, 서양에서 yoo 발음은 모음으로 취급 안한다.)
• A European country (마찬가지로 yuropean으로 발음되기 때문)

Count, Noncount

영어에서 noun은 count와 noncount로 분류된다. 즉, 대상을 셀 수 있는지 여부를 의미한다.

 

서양에서

• 개체(instance)는 셀 수 있다.
  1. bus, dish, church, box, potato, tomato
  2. baby, dictionary, party, holiday
  3. shelf, knife, wife
• 개념(concept, class)·집합은 셀 수 없다.
  1. fish, sheep, deer : 불규칙 명사로 단수/복수의 변화가 없다.
  2. air, snow, sand : 셀 수 있지만 너무 많아서 굳이 세진 않는 느낌
  3. bread, furniture : 여러 유형을 하나로 묶는 집합으로써의 의미
     • 셀 수 없는 것들을 세려면 앞에 'the', 'many', 'much' 혹은 'a bottle of', 'a cup of', 'a bar of' 등을 덧붙여야 한다.
  4. the police, the people : 집합을 나타내는 또다른 방법
     • 한 명의 경찰을 지칭하고 싶다면 'a police officer', 'a policeman'을 사용한다.
• 번외. 개념은 아니지만 무조건 plural로 쓰는 단어
  1. scissors (가위) : scissor라고 쓰면 '단검'이 된다.
  2. glasses : glass는 '유리'다.
  3. pants, jeans, shorts, tights, pajamas
