Cadence & Prosody are not pronunciation of individual sounds.

They are how speech moves over time.

 

Think music, not letters.

Cadence -- "the rhythmic shape of speech"

• Core concept = the timing pattern of stressed vs. unstressed beats
  • Pronunciation answers "how does a word sound?"
  • Cadence answers "how does the sentence walk?"

Practical examples

Example 1 — flat vs natural cadence

• Flat (unnatural) : I WANT to GO to the STORE to BUY some MILK.
• Natural cadence : I want to go to the store to buy some milk.
  • English cadence is stress-timed, not syllable-timed
  • Unstressed words collapse between beats
